I know I promised not to talk about the presidential election but I am only going to say this: what happened last night is a direct result of the last-minute law passed by the Florida legislature to require people with felony convictions to pay off their court fees in order to be allowed to vote. 1.4 million formerly incarcerated people got the right to vote in Florida in 2018, when the people passed a measure restoring their voting rights. After the legislature passed their hasty you-have-to-pay-us-back-first amendment, only 67,000 of those people registered in time for the October 2020 deadline. What do you think 1.3 million more formerly incarcerated voters in Florida would have done to last night’s vote?

It’s especially aggravating because one of the items on the ballot for 2020 was an amendment saying that any future amendments to the constitution would need to win a vote twice.

Like, motherfuckers, I bet if we’d voted to restore prisoner rights twice, you’d move to require it to be approved three times.

This is openly the hill that Republicans have chosen to die on and it is extremely clear why.
